Xero
Xero is the main challenger to Sage for South African SMEs: rand pricing including VAT (R450 Starter, R795 Standard, R1,095 Premium from 1 November 2025), feeds with the major banks, and the largest app marketplace. Payroll is a partner app — most South African Xero users pair it with SimplePay.

What it actually is
Xero is a practice-grade cloud ledger. Bank rec and unlimited users are the strength. It has no Nigerian tax edition: PAYE, WHT and NRS e-invoicing are not in the box. Early’s invoice caps make Growing the honest starter plan.
Features
| Feature | Coverage | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bank feeds | Core strength | The reason practices keep it — where the bank is in Xero’s list. |
| Accountant portal | Core strength | Xero HQ / practice suite, not a shared password. |
| Double-entry ledger | Strong | Clean GL. No Nigeria localisation pack. |
| Invoicing | Strong | Growing removes the Early invoice and bill caps. |
| Financial reports | Strong | Practice reporting is mature. Nigerian schedules are not. |
| Bookkeeping | Strong | Bank rec and repeating invoices are the daily work. |
| Multi-currency | Present | Established on the US plan chart. |
| VAT | Limited | GST/VAT features are generic. 7.5% is a rate you type in. |
| Inventory | Limited | Not the reason to buy Xero in Nigeria. Use a stock app. |
| WHT | Not offered | No Nigerian WHT module. |
| Payroll / PAYE | Not offered | Xero Payroll is not sold as NTA 2025 PAYE. |
| E-invoicing | Not offered | No NRS Access Point. |
| Spend / cards | Limited | Bills and Hubdoc-class add-ons. Not a spend-card platform. |

- SimplePay is the default cloud payroll for South African SMEs on Xero and many on Sage or QuickBooks: PAYE, UIF and SDL, IRP5/IT3(a) through e@syFile, leave and an employee self-service app. Pricing is a base fee plus a per-employee monthly fee, excluding VAT, with a free 30-day trial and an instant online quote.

- Tyms offers South African businesses AI-assisted bookkeeping at $200 per seat per year (about R3,280), with rand billing listed among its supported currencies. - QuickBooks Online is sold in South Africa but billed in US dollars, which puts it at a disadvantage against Sage and Xero’s rand pricing. It is a capable ledger and fits businesses whose accountants or parent companies already use it; for most South African SMEs, Sage or Xero is the more natural choice.
